DIGITAL ASSETS 101:
Digital assets are items of value created and stored in digital format, ranging from everyday files like photos and documents to blockchain-based instruments such as cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and tokenized securities. They exist electronically only, require digital devices for exchange, and operate on decentralized ledgers like blockchain, which ensures transparent, secure, and tamper-resistant tracking of ownership and transactions without traditional intermediaries.
Key categories include:
Cryptocurrencies:
Decentralized digital currencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum used for payments or as stores of value.
Stablecoins:
Tokens pegged to stable assets like the US dollar (e.g., USDC, USDT) to minimize volatility.
Tokenized Assets:
Digital representations of real-world assets, including stocks, bonds, real estate, and intellectual property.
NFTs:
Unique tokens certifying ownership of distinct digital or physical items, such as art or collectibles.
From a regulatory and tax perspective, the IRS treats digital assets as property, meaning transactions involving them are subject to standard capital gains tax principles. While traditional bank accounts cannot directly hold these assets, institutions are increasingly adopting specialized custody solutions and enterprise-grade infrastructure to manage them, facilitating broader mainstream adoption and integration into financial portfolios.
